Great Koala National Park Moves a Step Closer as Community Consultation Opens

The vision for the Great Koala National Park is moving another step closer, with the NSW Government inviting the community to help shape how people will responsibly enjoy the park once it is established.

A new public consultation has opened, focused on recreational opportunities within the proposed park area. This stage of planning is about getting the balance right, protecting critical koala habitat while considering how people can safely and respectfully access and enjoy the landscape.

The Great Koala National Park is being designed first and foremost to safeguard vital koala habitat across the NSW North Coast, alongside broader biodiversity protection. This consultation is not about whether the park should exist. It is about how it should function on the ground, with recreation that supports conservation rather than competes with it.

Community members are encouraged to share their views on low impact activities such as walking, nature appreciation, and cycling on designated trails. Feedback will help guide decisions around access, infrastructure, and long term management, ensuring the park reflects both environmental priorities and community insight.

This phase also acknowledges that national parks are strongest when communities are involved from the outset. Local knowledge and lived experience are essential in shaping spaces that are practical, respectful, and sustainable.

The NSW Government has advised that all submissions will be considered alongside ecological assessments and cultural considerations as planning continues.

Community consultation is now open, and feedback can be submitted online via the official Have Your Say page here:

This consultation offers a genuine opportunity for the community to help shape how one of NSW’s most significant conservation projects will be experienced, protected, and managed into the future.
